Learn More About Us
Risk of exposure is the most dangerous aspect of this type of cleanup. Technicians must adhere to strict guidelines which include:
- Proper PPE (Nitrile gloves, water resistant jacket, disposable coveralls)
- Tested N95 mask or air purifying respirator, safety goggles
- Do not open the suspect drug in the field unless absolutely required to do so
- Do not handle the exhibit unless required to do so
- Handle exhibit with a partner, let that person know where you are at all times
- Process exhibits under HEPA or plumbed filtration to prevent airborne contamination
- Do not process exhibits at your desk, only at appropriate locations
- When processing exhibits be aware of surface decontamination
- If exposed to an unknown powder, remove clothing or administrator rinsing agent
- Guidelines for disposal of Fentanyl include –
- Double bagging and clear labels (Fluorescent danger labels, WHMIS labels, etc.)
- Large volumes of suspected or confirmed Fentanyl should be placed in a secure container once double bagged
Many technicians are also trained in the administering of NALOXONE which is a drug that is often used to prevent death due to opoid overdose. With that, a technician must also be able to:
- Recognize the signs and symtoms of an opoid overdose
- Acquire a Naloxone Kit from various community based organizations, pharmacies and government sponsored programs
At Hudson, our technicians are highly trained in this type of clean up. Application of strict protocol is key to successful remediation. For instance, Disposal of Equipment is key:
- All disposable PPE must be placed and sealed into an EXHIBIT bag and clearly marked “Narcotic Contaminated” and sent for incineration. Items include gloves, masks and filters.
- Garbage must be placed and sealed into an exhibit bag and clearly marked “Narcotic Contaminated”. This must be sent for incineration.
- Reusable equipment must be cleaned according to manufacturers specifications.
